To Domenico Sgambati, recipient of a Dompé Foundation scholarship in 2020, research means dedication, tenacity but, above all, self-awareness, as it helps us understanding the limits of human knowledge. And it's exactly to this fulfilling activity, that he hopes to engage with after completing the Master's degree in Molecular Biotechnology at Vanvitelli University. Let's learn more about Domenico and his future career goals with this interview.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m Domenico, I’m 22 years old and l live near Avellino. After the Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnologies, I’ve chosen to attend the Master’s degree in Molecular Biotechnology run by the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. I’ve always been fascinated by the molecular mechanisms behind human diseases. This passion has guided me throughout all my studies.

What’s your degree all about?

My degree provides us with a thorough knowledge of Biotechnologies. We learn everything that has to do with Genetics, Biology, Biochemistry. We also learn how to manipulate cells and how to carry out laboratory experiments. In general, Molecular Biotechnology is addressed to those students that dream of becoming researchers or working in a pharmaceutical company.

Why have you chosen this path?

Because I believe It gives me the opportunity to develop the perfect set of skills to accomplish my dream, that is to become a biomedical research scientist. Plus, the course is held in English, the language of Science. Considering my career goal, it’s for sure the best choice!

What do you love the most about your degree program?

The fact that books are replaced with scientific journals, which are basically articles where researchers share their discoveries. In this way, we study all the details about such discoveries, and especially we learn why, in a specific laboratory experiment, a scientist has preferred a certain technique to another one.

What are your future goals?

For sure I’ll keep on studying by doing a PhD. To me Research means dedication, tenacity and especially self-awareness, as it helps us understanding the limits of our knowledge. Moreover, I would like one day to study rare genetic diseases or autoimmune connective tissue diseases.
