“If you can dream it, you can do it”
Born in 1999 in Bari, Mauro De Guglielmo has always believed in the most famous quote from Mickey Mouse’s "daddy", Walt Disney: «If you can dream it, you can do it.» And it's perhaps also thanks to the strength of his dreams that he was able to win the Dompé Foundation scholarship and thus undertake the Master's degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine. Here’s our interview with this talented student from the University of Bari "Aldo Moro".
What does this scholarship mean to you?
It’s a great source of pride. Moreover, it means being able to pursue an innovative journey and thus contribute, one day, to scientific progress.
Why have you chosen to carry out the Master’s in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine?
After my Bachelor's degree in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies, I felt the urge to learn more about the latest biotechnological approaches applied to biomedical research and diagnostics. As a matter of fact, the Master's in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine is offering me a broad view of different biotechnological applications, from neuroscience to medical genetics, from assisted reproduction to cell and tissue engineering.
What do you love the most about your degree?
The extensive program that includes many different disciplines, such as genetics, bioinformatics, and proteomics. Plus, the practical side: we explore the applications of the disciplines we study and spend many hours in the laboratory.
What gets you up in the morning?
The idea to take every day as an opportunity to continue to improve myself and help others.
Describe yourself in one word
Determined. I love setting challenging goals and doing my best to achieve them.
What is your dream job?
I would like to become a geneticist and do research. More specifically, I would like to focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying rare diseases to identify new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the future.
