From Tehran to Pavia: Mohammadhossein Akhbari on research, challenges, and the future of biotechnology
Meet Mohammadhossein Akhbari, a student with a strong belief in the power of scientific research to open new doors. With experiences from both Tehran and Pavia, Mohammadhossein is working toward a Master's degree in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies, aiming to make a real difference in the world. His interest in Senescence Biology and focus on age-related heart diseases reflects his dedication to improving human health and extending life. In this interview, Mohammadhossein discusses his journey, the challenges he's faced, and his hopes for the future of biotechnology. Join us as we delve into the work of a scientist committed to advancing biotechnologies.

How are Biotechnologies relevant today?
Biotechnologies play a crucial role in advancing new diagnostic methods, treatment strategies, and disease prevention through innovations such as gene therapies, personalized medicine, and vaccines. During the fight against COVID-19, for example, biotechnologies proved indispensable in developing effective vaccines. Furthermore, biotechnologies serve as a vital conduit for translating cutting-edge scientific discoveries into commercial success, fostering the development of new drugs, sustainable solutions in agriculture and many other improvements in several fields. Therefore, biotechnologies not only enhance the quality of life, but also fuel economic growth and job opportunities.
What does Biotechnology mean to you?
Biotechnology is a tool that makes the impossible possible.
What is your favorite subject at university and why?
The subject I'm most passionate about is Senescence Biology, which looks at why and how cells and organisms age over time. This area of research is making big strides in biotechnology and could change how we approach aging. For instance, scientists have recently managed to reprogram skin cells from older adults, making them 30 years younger. My goal is to focus on age-related heart diseases, one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
What’s your motto?
Never give up. At some point in our lives, we all encounter moments when success seems out of reach, tempting us to abandon our efforts. However, what sets successful individuals apart is their choice to persist on their path despite these challenges and emerge stronger, even when failing.
What has been the greatest challenge you’ve ever faced?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was moving from Iran to Italy. Being far from my family and friends and adjusting to a completely new environment was tough. The hardest part was dealing with loneliness since I didn’t know anyone when I arrived. It took time to build new friendships, but after more than a year, I’ve settled into life as a student in a new country and overcome the loneliness by connecting with new people.

Why did you choose to pursue your master’s degree in Italy?
After obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnologies in Tehran, I wanted to pursue my Master’s degree abroad and picked Italy over other destinations, firstly because the quality of academic education is very impressive - the University of Pavia is a highly renowned institution for education in the scientific field - but also for several other reasons: the country’s rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes; the affordable cost of living (with the money I’m managing to save, I’m taking a few trips around!); the mild climate, which was a key factor in the decision-making process as I struggle with very cold weather!
What was your biggest dream as a child? How about today?
As a child, my greatest aspiration was to become a person of value, not just for my family but for people worldwide. The development of the first COVID-19 vaccine deeply moved me and led me to admire the dedicated scientists behind this ground-breaking achievement. Witnessing their contributions to society sparked a profound inspiration within me. It nurtured a hope that one day I, too, could make a meaningful and impactful contribution to the world. Now, thanks to the Dompé Foundation scholarship, I can focus deeply on my studies to try and pursue this dream.
Who would you choose to have dinner with if you could have it with any person, living or dead?
If I could, I’d choose the Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma. I admire his unique leadership style, which emphasizes humility, lifelong learning, and valuing the perspectives of younger generations. Unlike many other entrepreneurs, Ma actively listens to fresh ideas from new talent and adapts his strategies to stay ahead in changing times. These qualities are key to his continued success.

Which hobby would you never give up?
Swimming and swimming coaching. I've been swimming for 20 years, starting at the age of five. When I turned 18, I began my journey as a swimming coach and lifeguard. Swimming makes me feel free and helps me release stress. It's like entering a completely new world that absorbs all the negative feelings and tension.
What does the Dompé Foundation scholarship mean to you?
Beyond a significant financial aid, this scholarship has offered me the unparalleled opportunity to chase my academic and professional dreams. By lightening the burden of educational expenses, it has allowed me to dedicate myself completely to my studies and personal development. Furthermore, it has been a recognition of my efforts and potential, and an encouragement to excel. The scholarship has also meant the chance to join a community of scholars where I can learn from like-minded individuals and possibly contribute back in the future.
Some students avoid applying for scholarships out of fear of not winning. Did you have similar doubts when applying for the Dompé Scholarship?
At the outset, I found myself grappling with doubts regarding my chances of securing the Dompé Foundation scholarship. However, instead of succumbing to those uncertainties, I chose to apply in the final days. I convinced myself that even if the odds seemed against me, submitting the application was an opportunity as such. I realized that whether I won or not, there was nothing to lose in giving it a try. This application process served as a valuable testing ground for me. It allowed me to refine my interview skills, a crucial asset for my forthcoming doctoral pursuits and future job interviews. Embracing this perspective, I saw the application as a chance not solely to win a scholarship, but also to fortify my capabilities for future opportunities.
