From ancient writers to data science: an unexpected path

Despite studying Greek and Latin in high school, Rocco Gazzaneo opted for a scientific degree later on in university, which may seem unexpected. However, he reveals that classics have actually influenced his undergraduate degree's choice. As a student of the Master of Science in Data Science and Business Analytics at Bocconi and recipient of a "Fondazione Dompé student Award", Rocco shares his story in our interview.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m Rocco, I’m 22 years old and I’m attending the Master of Science in Data Science and Business Analytics at Bocconi. I’ve chosen this degree as during my Bachelor’s in Economics Management and Computer Science I became passionate about Machine Learning, a branch of AI which basically uses algorithms to make predictions. I was intrigued by the possibility to apply it to many different fields: from Economics and Finance, to Art and Music.

What’s your degree all about?

The Master provides a strong foundation in Theoretical and Applied Statistics and Machine Learning. These disciplines are crucial to identify effective models and methods for data analysis. The Master’s goal is to develop a profile that will support companies and institutions in their decision-making processes thanks to data prediction and, therefore, the application of Artificial Intelligence algorithms.

Why have you chosen this path?

One might not expect a person who has studied Greek and Latin at high school to opt for a scientific path. However, it’s actually what I’ve studied in those years that has brought me here. Besides having developed an effective study method, thanks to classical studies I’ve also become an all-round person. I’m interested in many things - such as Art, Music and Poetry - and I was excited when I’ve learnt that Mathematics and Science play a key role within these fields. This Master pleases both my interest in Innovation and Science and my creative side.

What do you love the most about your degree program?

For sure the professors and classmates who constantly inspire me, bringing the best out of me.

What are your future goals?

Once I complete my studies, I would like to work for a Computer Vision company and focus on the application of AI to images. For example, think about the development of algorithms that may early diagnose skin diseases; or, if we move on to Agriculture, the implementation of AI to spot, much earlier than humans would be capable of, the subtle changes in crop production.
