Inspired by the vision of a leading chemist: a new opportunity for young researchers in the United States

The Dompé Foundation takes a further step in supporting international scientific education by announcing the “Renato Ugo” scholarship, an initiative that celebrates the intellectual and human legacy of one of Italy’s most distinguished chemists and further strengthens the Foundation’s longstanding connection with the United States, already established through the Rita Levi Montalcini call.

Starting in the 2025/2026 academic year, the Foundation will support young students and researchers engaged in a Master’s, PhD, or Postdoctoral program in Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, or Pharmaceutical Chemistry at universities or research centers in the United States. With a total investment of $75,000, this scholarship aims to foster the growth of young researchers, broadening their perspectives, expertise, and career prospects.

This initiative pays tribute to the visionary spirit of Professor Renato Ugo, one of the most authoritative voices in Italian chemistry. After completing a scholarship at the University of Milan, he became a Lecturer, Full Professor, and finally Professor of Inorganic Chemistry from 1981 to 2010. With hundreds of publications in international journals, he led the Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca Industriale (AIRI) for over thirty years, fostering dialogue between academia and industry and collaborating with some of the leading players in the Italian pharmaceutical sector.

Within this perspective of international dialogue, the scholarship – promoted in collaboration with AIRI – reaffirms the Foundation’s commitment to supporting a new generation of researchers, offering meaningful opportunities in world-class scientific environments and encouraging open, collaborative, and forward-looking research.

“The Renato Ugo scholarship is a tribute to the scientific rigor and passion for knowledge that guided his entire career. Supporting research means continuing his commitment to building connections between people, innovations, and knowledge. Through this initiative, we aim to offer not only a tangible opportunity but also a message of trust: science is, and must remain, an extraordinary tool for empowerment.”
Sergio Dompé, Dompé Foundation President
