Economic and Social Sciences: the answer to the "big questions"

19/05/2021

Meet Giovanni Dettori, a winner of a "Fondazione Dompé Student Award" with a passion for exploring the "big questions". Driven by a desire to uncover the true essence of the world around him, Giovanni has chosen to attend the Master of Science in Economic and Social Sciences at Bocconi. In our interview, he shares his academic journey and future plans.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m Giovanni, I’m 22 years old and I come from a little town near Vicenza. After my Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Finance, I’ve decided to attend the Master of Science in Economic and Social Sciences (ESS) in Bocconi. I’ve chosen to study Economics in its purest form as I’ve always been fascinated by the Big Questions, the ones that push us to investigate the true essence of what surrounds us.

What’s your degree all about?

This Master focuses on Economic Theory. We mostly take courses in analytical subjects, such as Mathematics, Statistics and Econometrics. Essentially, the aim of this degree is to provide students with the ideal set of skills to fully understand how the world of Economics works. The Master offers different job opportunities, such as in the consulting or data analytics industries. However, most of the graduates end up opting for a PhD.

Why have you chosen this path?

Because it offers an extraordinary personalization opportunity. Differently from many other Masters, at ESS we don’t have any core courses but just elective ones. As a consequence, every student has a unique learning pathway.

What are your future goals?

Well, there are a number of goals and ideas on my bucket list. Career-wise, I’m attracted by the risk management field for a couple of reasons. First of all, it would give me the chance to apply all the computational skills I’ve acquired. Secondly, this industry is particularly relevant today: with the Covid-19 pandemic, for example, we have experienced a risk which most of us considered unlikely. As far as the near future is concerned, as I’ll move to Tokyo for the second year of the Master, I’m evaluating whether to extend my stay there, maybe by doing an internship or a PhD.
