Six active calls for application for 35 scholarships in Italy and abroad
Allocated €2.5 million this year to support young STEM talents of all nationalities
With four new scholarships for the Master’s students in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Trento, the number of Dompé Foundation scholarships for young STEM talents in the 2023/2024 academic year rises to 44. Five calls are currently active in Italy at five top-notch universities - the University of Verona, the University of Pavia, the University of Milan, the University of Bari Aldo Moro, and the University of Trento - for a total number of 19 scholarships. In addition to this, the Foundation is also offering 16 scholarships in the United States: this call is dedicated to Rita Levi Montalcini and is addressed to aspiring neuroscientists.
In the 2023/2024 academic year, the Dompé Foundation has allocated € 2.5 million to support the higher education of promising students in the STEM disciplines, bringing the total allocation to €8.5 million since it started its activity four years ago. The Foundation has awarded 81 scholarships to date; however, this number will exceed 100 by the first half of 2024, when all the winners of the fourth round of funding will be designated.
Established in 2020 by Sergio Dompé, Executive President of Dompé farmaceutici, the Foundation has been active also in the United States since 2021 with a scholarship program honoring the legacy of the only female Italian Nobel laureate in Medicine, Rita Levi Montalcini. This opportunity is intended for students of any nationality that have already been admitted to a Master's, PhD or Post-doc in neuroscience or neurobiology across the United States. The initiative, which in its first two editions awarded up to eight annual scholarships, aims to support twice as many students this year, for a total investment of up to about $1 million.
In addition to the doubling of the budget for the “Rita Levi Montalcini” scholarships, there are two main novelties for this year's scholarships program: the addition of the University of Trento to the Foundation's network of Italian universities, as well as the launch of two partial tuition waivers for two female students attending the Executive Master's in Business of Events at Bocconi University. This opportunity - dedicated to the founder of Dompé farmaceutici, Franco Dompé - aims to contribute to reducing the gender gap that still persists in the sports industry in Italy.
Although the Dompé Foundation scholarships program supports university students at all levels of study, it especially focuses on Master's, PhDs and Post-doc studies. In terms of area of study, the undisputed stars are the life sciences, which currently engage 90% of the recipients. All the programs sponsored by the Foundation share a commitment to multidisciplinary learning, technological education, and the opportunity to access an international network.
The Foundation has three main goals: break down barriers to higher education for promising low-income students; favor the development of the careers of the future, especially within the life sciences; help reduce the gender disparity in the STEM fields by supporting the studies of the most talented women. Its scientific committee includes, among others, Luigi Nicolais, former president of the CNR and founder of the innovative startup Materias, and Francesca Pasinelli, CEO of the Fondazione Telethon since 2009.
All the details about active calls for application are available on the Dompé Foundation website in the "Scholarships & Fellowships" section.
